Serious cooking made fun, or fun cooking made serious.
Both my husband and I enjoyed spending a good part of the day with Pearly and Chandra at their house, where Pearly taught us how to make Assam Laksa, Popiah and Vegetable Achard, the traditional way.
Chandra picked us up from the hotel and made us comfortable straight away with his insightful and engaging conversation.
Pearly is an excellent teacher, and generously teaches all the secrets of good cooking - what goes into that extra bit of magic in food. She is also careful to share how to maximize usage of food so that wastage is minimized.
She grows her own herbs and vegetables, so you can see what things look like before they are processed. Both Chandra and Pearly were most hospitable at the dining table, as we ate and talked about our experiences, and in particular, what it is like living in Penang.
Pearly invited us to try some delectable home made fish achar, and made us a zesty lemon drink to go with our meal. For anyone looking to have a meaningful culinary experience in Penang, Chandra and Pearly are a must-visit.
